Snowballing Health Problems; Winter Health Tip; Creamy Red Pepper Soup
Health Tip:
Did you know that sugar decreases your immune system response by 50% for 4-5 hours??! One way to help you stay well this winter is by decreasing sugar consumption. No, I am not expecting people to completely give up all sugar at Christmas. BUT, try to make purposeful choices about what you do choose to eat when it comes to sugar. The more whole foods you consume and less processed and sugar-laden, the stronger your immune system will be.

Top of the Hill
I want to paint a picture: you’re standing at the top of a heavy snow covered hill. You pack a wonderful tight snowball, and you drop it at your feet. It starts to roll down the hill and as it does so, it gains speed and starts gaining in size. By the time it gets to the very bottom of the hill it is a massive snowball boulder!
Now, thinking of this particular analogy, think about your health. Is it easier to fix this snowball health problem at the bottom of the hill or the top of the hill? If we work on the problem at the bottom of the hill, it is a huge problem that needs massive intervention! However, if we work on the problem at the top of the hill, it is a tiny snowball problem which requires little effort to eliminate.
Again, I ask which is easier: to fix a problem when it is a little problem or wait until it is a big problem? When I am working with patients, I actually find this analogy works in two different ways. The first is that waiting too long to fix a problem results in a much bigger problem to fix. It is much easier to fix it when it is a new, fresh, small problem than waiting for it to become a bigger issue. The other way this analogy comes into play with patients, is how we actually address a problem. One of my goals with patient care is to go to as far ‘up the hill’ as I possibly can to fix the problem. This allows us to get to the root of the problem. In the analogy of the snowball at the top of the hill, the root of the problem is the snowball that was dropped that then became a very big boulder. With health, it is often a small problem that then transforms into a big problem as time progresses. If we can find the root of that health issue, or sometimes issues, a few small changes can have exponential results. That is what I call working smarter, and not harder!
