Better Late Than Never; Symptoms; Sautéed Brussels Sprouts
Health Tip:
Did you know that by the time you have a symptom, your body has had a problem for quite a while? Symptoms are the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away. You are not necessarily healthy if you have no symptoms (just consider cancer or high blood pressure which often have no symptoms until advanced stages). Once you address a symptom and it goes away that is when the REAL healing begins! Whatever you did to get healthy to the point of no symptoms needs to CONTINUE so that you can really heal! Sometimes that means 3 months, other times it means years; more damage means more healing must occur.
Monthly Article:
Better Late Than Never
It is July 30 and I am just now writing my July newsletter. Some may think I should just skip this newsletter and go onto August and I did consider that for a short moment. But I decided this would be a really good opportunity to have a teachable moment. Just because I am late doesn’t mean that I should skip something entirely.
I try to remind people that sometimes progress is more important that aiming for perfection. Don’t start your health journey trying to shoot for perfection! If you try to be perfect the likelihood of you getting started significantly decreases. Aim to make a few good, healthy changes that you know you can do. Dr. Smith started by pulling out trans fats from her diet and then moved to no sodas. Doing small changes like this that are doable, start to add up over the years. Don’t feel like you can afford all organic food? Start eliminating processed foods and purchase conventional whole foods and fix your meals at home. You will naturally start moving to healthier options in the future when you can. We want PROGRESS, NOT PERFECTION!
Again, working on your health doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach. You don’t have to do everything perfect. You can attempt to do something and “some” is better than “none.” For example, some good health food choices are better than no good health food choices. Some exercise is better than no exercise.
This can actually involve all areas of our life. Some progress is still progress. Just because I’m getting this newsletter out later than I really want to doesn’t mean I can’t do it. We all have goals and doing even just a little bit to work towards them is still moving towards them. By doing a little something that you feel like you need to be doing for hitting your goals (health goals, financial goals, relationship goals) you might be surprised at how much you actually start getting done. You may be starting momentum that is going to start paying off in the long run even though it seems like just a silly little thing right now. I said it before: progress over perfection. What do you need to do that you feel like it is “too late” to try? Try anyway!
Recipe of the Month:
Sautéed Brussels Sprouts
A cooler weather crop, now is a great time to buy Brussels sprouts fresh. The sprouts have gotten a bad reputation but it is more than likely the way in which they were cooked that is responsible for this. I personally don’t like boiled Brussels sprouts but just love them sautéed. Try this method of cooking them and see what you think. Brussels sprouts are great veggies for your liver and the rest of your body. They help detoxify and are great anti-cancer veggies.
1. Clean sprouts and trim bottom of sprouts. Remove the outer leaves (they should fall away after trimming).
2. Cut the sprouts in half and place them, cut side down, in a preheated pan that has a thin layer of butter, bacon grease, or coconut oil on the bottom. Sprinkle sea salt over the top and cover.
3. Cook over medium to low heat for about 7 minutes, just until the bottoms are lightly browned and the sprouts are bright green. (Watch them to avoid burning and over-cooking. Dark green sprouts are over-cooked and, in my opinion, don’t taste as good.)
